8 Random Switzerland Facts

Jungfrau Region's Blogbuster Series / Nr. 35

Switzerland - we know it and we love it. Cows, mountains, cheese, watches and chocolate: yes, of course that is 100% Swissness. Switzerland is pretty small, but there are still some things you didn't know about chocolate, the Swiss cross or Sundays in Switzerland. We will show you some of them in the 8 random Swiss Facts below.

#1 Swiss are addicted to chocolate

The average Swiss person eats around 240 bars of chocolate every year. Which is understandable, considering that Switzerland produces the best chocolate in the world.

#2 A red square with a white cross

Along with Vatican City, Switzerland is the only country in the world to have a square flag – a red square with a white cross. Some people say it's a big plus.

#3 Somehow the numbers must be different in Switzerland

Unlike in most places, the Swiss show the «1» with their thumb when counting with their fingers.

#4 Switzerland is the highest

Switzerland has more high peaks than any other country in Europe: 48 that are above 4000 meters, 5 of them in the Jungfrau Region.

#5 We have a lot of water

Switzerland’s land mass is only 0.4 percent of Europe, but the country holds 6 percent of the continent’s freshwater reserves, which is possible because of the many lakes and glaciers in Switzerland. Some of the mountain lakes in the Jungfrau Region also serve to cool down in summer.

#6 What we are famous for

We may not have many world-famous personalities, but perhaps the most famous is the widely used sans serif Helvetica Font, which is actually from Switzerland.

#7 The typical Swiss goes hiking on Sundays

No wonder when we consider that Switzerland has many beautiful mountain landscapes and over 60'000 km of signposted hiking trails.

#8 Sunday is Funday

In Switzerland there are laws that make it illegal to move, hang out laundry, wash your car or recycle bottles on Sundays. So, enjoy the Sunday instead of working.
