Christmas celebration

The most families in Switzerland celebrate Christmas on the 24th December and not on the 25th. Some celebrate Christmas three times, on 24th, 25th and 26th December.

Skiing

For some families it is traditional to go skiing together on the 25th December before they celebrate in the evening.

Christmas dinner

In Switzerland we do not have a traditional Christmas meal. Many families eats fondue, raclette or fondue chinoise.

Grittibänz

The «Grittibänz» we bake for the 6th December. We gave the «Grittibänz» the Santa Claus as a present.

Mulled wine

During advent, it is very popular in Switzerland to drink mulled wine. At markets with friends or at home for Christmas with the family.

Cookies

During the advent time the swiss people bake some cookies, we call it «Güetzli Bache». The «Güetzli» we serve our families or take it as a gift.

Santa Claus

The Santa Claus is called in swiss german «Samichlous». On the 6th December, the kids meet him, mostly outdoors, for example in the forest. His helper is «Schmutzli» to present their verses and receive trats from his big bag.

Christmas markets

Through the advent season, there is a Christmas market in most villages. Most people visit the market with the family or friends.
