Who doesn’t love the fragrance of freshly washed laundry? However until well into the 20th century washing was back-breaking work. Again and again the washerwomen had to boil water and scoop in various tubs. With the aid of beech ash and soap they flushed out soot and sweat. Obstinate marks were removed on the washboard through beating and scrubbing.
