5 Winter Hiking Trails

Jungfrau Region's Blogbuster Series / Nr. 58

You haven't had enough of the snow yet, but don't want to hit the ski slopes anymore, just enjoy the snow and the sun? Then winter hiking could be the right thing for you! The saying «the way is the goal» fits to winter hiking, because not only the highest point of the hike is beautiful, but also the landscape while hiking. Especially now that spring is approaching, winter hiking is a great activity where you still enjoy the warm rays of the sun as well as the snow to the fullest. Here are 5 of the best winter hiking trails in the Jungfrau Region:

#1 ROYAL WALK MÄNNLICHEN

The starting point is easily accessible by gondola from Grindelwald Grund. The hike starts on the Männlichen and takes about 25 minutes to reach the Männlichen summit. The breathtaking panoramic view makes you forget all the exertions of the ascent. The view from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau over the Breithorn to Lake Thun and the Wetterhorn guarantees a unique and unforgettable experience.

#2 GRÜTSCHALP-WINTEREGG-MÜRREN

High above the deep basin of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the winter hike from the Grütschalp to Mürren captivates with fantastic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The world-famous mountain trio is visible for the entire duration of the hike. The hiking trail meanders along the slope at sunny elevations and is extremely well-maintained. The final destination of the tour is the car-free alpine village of Mürren. Its decorative wooden houses exude warmth and rustic charm. On the return journey to the Grütschalp, the Männlichen and Faulhorn mountain ranges in the background create a panoramic view that is nothing short of magnificent. If you want to shorten the hike by a few kilometres, follow the trail to Winteregg and take the train to Mürren or Grütschalp.

#3 GSCHWANDTENMAD RUNDWANDERUNG

The Rosenlaui Valley, a jewel of the local alpine region, is home to picturesque and inspiring landscapes traversed by rugged cliffs. Its beauty attracted prominent artists and poets to the region 200 years ago. In winter, far away from crowded ski slopes, this beautifully designed winter hiking trail along the flat valley floor invites you to explore.

#4 FIRST-BACHALPSEE

The starting point of this leisurely and multifaceted hike can be accessed by gondola from Grindelwald to First. After a short but steep ascent to the Gummihütte, the trail rolls along gently until reaching Lake Bachalp. The impressive peaks of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn rise up to greet hikers on the other side of the valley. The Grindelwald-First ski area offers a variety of hiking and sledging trails as well as places to stop for a bite to eat and full-day packages.

#5 LAUTERBRUNNEN-STECHELBERG

In the picturesque Lauterbrunnen Valley, a lot revolves around water. This hike, which can also be called a walk, passes the Staubbach Falls after a short march. It then goes past the thundering Trümmelbach Waterfalls and the Breithorn campground, continuing over the Weisse Lütschine to Stechelberg. You can then return to Lauterbrunnen on foot along the same route or take the bus.
