Change Of Season

Jungfrau Region's Blogbuster Series / Nr. 20

It feels like yesterday when we said goodbye to summer. Now it's already early November.

But before we move on to this...

…we got you covered with some tips & tricks to help you deal with the change of season.

First of all, many hotels are closed for a moment after the long summer season. During this time, renovation work is often carried out. Of course you can also stay in one of our many holiday apartments. Book the right offer for you in our web shop or get in touch with us or our dear colleagues from the local tourist offices to find a nice place for you to stay. To the tourisms offices

The railways in our region also have adapted operating times or are closed during this period of year. Here's an overview of the operating trains and cable cars in November to help you plan your excursions:

Lauterbrunnen - Grütschalp - Mürren, aerial cableway and train

Still closed at the moment due to revision work but will open again on 9 November.
For the hikers: The hike from Grütschalp to Mürren is easy to do and offers great views.

Schilthorn - Piz Gloria, aerial cableway

Still open now, revision work starting on 11 November. The Schilthorn offers stunning views and a great brunch offer. You can reach it via Stechelberg or directly from Mürren.

Great read about the Schilthorn, for a rainy autumn day: How a mountain becomes an icon.

Isenfluh - Sulwald, cable car, open all year

The small, almost nostalgic cable car has been in existence since 1975 and offers space for eight people...or one cow. The cable car might be small but the view at Sulwald is great. Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau say hello.

Meiringen - Hasliberg Reuti, aerial cableway, open all year

The long village of Hasliberg offers great views and the possibility to do nice autumn walks.

BOB Railway, trains to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen

Important info, as this route is usally open all year long: As a result of construction work in Wilderswil, the train route between Interlaken Ost - Zweilütschinen - Lauterbrunnen will be closed from Thursday, 31 October, 5 am until Friday, 6 December 2019, 11.30 pm.

Buses run as replacements. Guests from Grindelwald have to change from the train to the bus in Zweilütschinen (or vice versa from Interlaken Ost). Guests from Lauterbrunnen use the bus all the way.

Please note the info and announcements on the trains and at the stations. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the railway staff.

New train departure times during this period:

  • XX.16 and XX.46 from Grindelwald
  • XX.30 and XX.00 from Lauterbrunnen

Extra tip if you're travelling Switzerland by public transport: Download the SBB App. The SBB is our national train company. The App's easy to use and very helpful to check your connections and make you aware of such changes to the timetable.

The Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe remains unimpressed by all of this. Europe's highest railway station can be reached all year round. What about a nice overnight stay in the Jungfrau Region plus a visit to one of Switzerland's most famous travel destinations? Our Jungfraujoch Special Package is still available until 1 December 2019. Book now.

Kleine Scheidegg can also be reached by train all year round, via Grindelwald or Wengen. It's where you change the train to the Jungfraujoch. On Kleine Scheidegg, you find yourself directly under the infamous north face of the Eiger. Stop for a moment to take it all in.

Since some of the excursion mountains are closed, it's worth taking a closer look at our villages. There are many small hikes and walks in and around them as well as other activities. Us and our colleagues from the tourist info are also happy to help you out with some suggestions.

Here's a few already, just for you:

Power Plant Tours Grimsel

Great offer for groups: In the power plants of the Grimselwelt, you have the opportunity to explore the world of hydropower. Find out more about the production of electricity and the technology used in power plants. Discover this unique underground world deep inside the solid granite mountains of the Aare valley, where the turbines reliably produce hydroelectricity, year in year out.

Indoor Rope Park Grindelwald

Great for any kind of weather: Visit the largest Indoor Rope Park in Europe. For once you can experience the Eiger indoors! Five circuits are waiting to be explored. Under the roof of the ice hall both young and old can balance, climb or fly across the sometimes rather wobbly and challenging courses. The use of the park requires no particular level of fitness. All visitors are supplied with the necessary equipment and are instructed by the staff.

By the way: There's a boulder hall next to the rope park where you can train. And in Meiringen there's an even bigger climbing hall which is open all year round.

Out of the fog and up the mountain. The weather in the mountains is basically very changeable. In autumn and spring you often notice this even more than usual. If you're not quite sure about the weather forecast, you can always take a look at our webcams.

Some last words for you...

During this change of season, there's a lot of bold shifts in colors, temperatures, and light. You might sense personal shifts too. For some, an End-of-summer sadness might be setting in. But choose to look forward instead of focusing on the rearview mirror. Appreciate and enjoy the changes of nature before winter arrives. Taste the heartier food and hot drinks.

The change of season also offers an opportunity to reassess and figure out what's working and what isn't. It may be the perfect time to begin something new or take on a stimulating challenge. Take care of yourselves guys. Spend some quality time with friends and family. Make room for fun and enjoyment as seasons change and you keep moving forward.

Winter is coming...
..and it's not bringing white walkers (hello Game of Thrones fans) with it - but lots of fun!
