One day under power
The KWO’s (Oberhasli Power Company) infrastructure form one of the most complex hydroelectric systems in the alps. Since its founding in 1924, the KWO has continually expanded its infrastructure which today consists of 13 power plants, 8 storage lakes, 160km of tunnels, hundreds of kilometres of pipes, roads and transport lifts. The KWO produces enough hydroelectricity for more than 1 million people.
Tours of the power plants are possible in summer and winter. The KWO visitor's service gives you the opportunity to take a closer look at the production of renewable and CO2-free hydroelectricity.
The following tours can be booked during winter season:
Grimsel Undergrund
The Grimselwelt’s power plants are power plants you can get close to. A world where you can discover everything you always wanted to know about electricity. Producing electricity from hydropower needs technology. Deep inside the mountains, everything is all action. The turbines at the power plants at Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG run at full power – year in, year out. Experience the energy hidden in the granite and check out the fascinating crystal grotto.
Wasserkraft-Pioniere
onstruction of KWO’s first power plant in Handeck got underway in 1925. A second power plant was built in 1947, with the addition of a third, state-of-the art plant in 2012. On this journey through three generations of power plants and the imposing maze of tunnels, you will find out more about 100 years of pioneering work in hydropower. The new crystal exhibition in one of the winding tunnels is another highlight of the Grimselwelt: The most beautiful “sparklers” discovered in 2019 during the blasting work for the replacement Spitallamm dam are on show here to visitors.
