Winter hiking: Starting from the Bussalp or First, a two-and-a-half-hour uphill hike takes you high up to the Faulhorn summit at 2,680 m above sea level. But you have to pull the sledges up the mountain yourself.

Sledging: From the Faulhorn to Grindelwald via the Bussalp, the «Pintenfritz» covers a total of 15 kilometres and 1,600 metres of elevation, thus giving it the distinction of the longest sledging run in Europe. Surrounded by the peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the sledging adventure in Grindelwald is truly a unique experience.

Author Tips

On the way there are the following stops: Mountain Inn First, Adi's Skibar Oberjoch and the mountain restaurant Bussalp.

However, a special experience is a picnic on the Faulhorn. Here, next to the mountain hotel, you can choose a sunny spot in the middle of the snow-covered mountains. With the appropriate equipment you can even have a small fondue or raclette.

  • Sledges or other driving equipment such as velogemel, bobsleigh etc.
  • Suitable winter clothing, gloves, snow sports helmet, ski goggles
  • High, solid shoes with a good profile
  • Braking aid on the shoes (shortens braking distance)
  • Sun cream & lip protection
  • Food & Drinks
  • Emergency numbers
  • Optional: Use sledge instead of conventional wooden sledge (better controllable)

Safety Guidelines

  • The path leads along a winter hiking trail. Please be considerate of hikers.
  • As the last part of the trail runs along the village road, a descent all the way down to the valley is only possible in good snow conditions.

Getting There

Public transport

Thanks to its central location in Europe, Switzerland is served by international trains from over 12 countries. Within Switzerland, Intercity trains run directly from Basel and Lucerne to the Jungfrau Region. Travellers from Zurich have to change in Berne. The trains run every half hour.

Getting there

There are different ways to reach the region by car. The fastest way from Basel and Geneva is via Berne. The fastest route from Zurich is through Lucerne and the Brünig Pass. The pass is open in summer and winter.

From the south, the route goes over the Grimsel or Susten Pass into the region. Both passes are only open in summer. Alternatively, you can take the Simplon Pass and then Lötschberg car transport.

Grindelwald has public car parks with covered parking spaces: Eiger+ car park (252 parking spaces) and Sportzentrum car park (160 parking spaces). They cannot be reserved in advance. Uncovered parking spaces are available everywhere in the village.
