12 Winter Insta Spots

Many people choose a travel spot based on its «Instagrammability». Is that even a word? Nevermind.

Anyway, this isn't about the hype. We don't want you all to run to these spots for pictures only. It's a privilege to live and work in such a beautiful and well-preserved region. So also for you, our dear guests visiting: you should experience our region through your own eyes first, not a lense. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and just simply enjoy the nature you're surrounded by while you're here.

However, social media has become an integral part of our society. We're aware of that. And hey, we're a modern, dynamic company. Well okay, in reality this text was written on an old typewriter. But whatever. While travelling, you'll find a lot of cool things to take pics of. They're also great memories. So here are 12 Insta spots for you to discover this winter.

Our Insta-Sports are always a highlight, but the pictures get especially beautiful if there’s snow outside. Which is why these Insta-Spots are worth a visit especially in Winter. And after all, it’s not that much longer until the Winter season starts and hopefully we can see the first snowflakes very soon. We’re sure, you all are also waiting for the moment where you can finally say:  Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow..

1. #First Cliff Walk

First, let's start with First. You can comfortably ride the gondola from Grindelwald to reach this excursion mountain. What you can see on the pic below, is a nice lookout platform near the terrace of the mountain restaurant. It's part of the Cliff Walk, a thrilling construction alongside the rocks. If you're in for even more adventure, you can fly down the hill like an eagle with the First Flyer or Glider (starting from the mountain station). Other options are skiing, snowboarding, sledging or winter hiking. All possible here – because you're in the middle of the Grindelwald-First ski area.

Please be aware that this year, the Cable Car Grindelwald – First is closed until December 19th.

2. #Lauterbrunnen village

The Lauterbrunnen valley fascinates many people. Even J. R. R. Tolkien visited it when he was a young lad travelling through Switzerland. But Tolkien wasn't here to take a selfie or labeled Lauterbrunnen as «Instagrammable» haha. He must've liked it though. Because he found some inspiration for his Lord of the Rings books here.

Lauterbrunnen is also known as the valley of 72 waterfalls. Vertical rock faces and delightful terraces, framed by snow-capped peaks. Glaciers have shaped this scenery in thousand of years. If you arrive by train, you'll soon be able to take a nice shot of the village. The church tower is something our guests surely like on their pics.

3. #From Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg

Not many people know that Lauterbrunnen's also the birthplace of skateboarding. Like this guy on the pic, locals only travel on 4 wheels here. Nah come on, we're just kidding. Of course Lauterbrunnen's not the birthplace of skateboarding. In this case, the skateboard helped to make it a cool pic though. It was taken on the main road between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. Stechelberg's a small village at the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley.

If you're going for a pic like that, please be responsible and only go on the road when there's no traffic. Thank you. Because you should never risk your life just to get a good pic.

4. #Reichenbach valley

The Reichenbach, from which the name of the valley derives, flows from the Grosse Scheidegg to Meiringen, where it flows into the Aare river. «Bach» means creek in German by the way. Located in the middle of the valley, there's the Rosenlaui – it's considered the smallest village in Switzerland and its historic hotel is a reminder of the early days of tourism here. Above the valley a panorama opens up to the Rosenlaui glacier and surrounding mountains.

The area is really remote and peaceful. You can go for a nice snowshoe or winter hike. We recommend renting a sledge and taking the bus to Grosse Scheidegg. After a ride to Schwarzwaldalp, you can enjoy a nice Fondue. Schwarzwaldalp is a charming mountain hotel. Perfect for spending a night in Winter Wonderland.

5. #Grimsel Hospiz

Another remote spot in the Haslital valley. This one's a little special though and a real winter oasis – the Grimsel Hospiz, a historic alpine hotel on top of the mountain pass. Staying here means switching off and slowing down. Hm, that's a little contradictory. Because this is a blog about Instagram haha. Okay, let's say 1 awesome photo on arrival, then you put your phone away. Deal? Deal.

Deep in the snow, the hotel sits enthroned in the middle of an untouched natural landscape. Already during the extraordinary journey with cable cars and through deep tunnels you can leave the everyday world behind. A crackling fireplace and steaming bath tub await you. All under a starry roof.

6. #Alpen tower

That's our last spot in the Haslital valley. Boldly named the Alpen tower. High above the Haslital, at 2,250 metres above sea level, stands the majestic mountain station and restaurant. The fantastic 360-degree panoramic view that stretches far beyond the Bernese Oberland and Central Switzerland's high Alps doesn't fail to impress you again and again...

So taking pictures requires a lot of energy. You can enjoy an awesome brunch (please make a reservation in advance). After that, winter hiking, sledging or slope fun on your skis or snowboard awaits you.

Please note that the Cable Car to the Alpen Toweer is closed until December 19th.

7. #Mürren, view Lauterbrunnen valley

This one's located in Mürren. If you arrive by train and just follow the main road through the beautiful snow-covered, car-free mountain village, you will see where it is. There might be some tourists already taking pics there. The scenery opens up here and you get a really nice view of the Lauterbrunnen valley. The village also offers other nice spots to take some pictures. Experience it yourself.

8. #Thrill Walk at Birg

From Mürren, the 2,970-metre-high Schilthorn attracts visitors with a 360-degree panoramic view of the «Swiss skyline» of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and a tasty menu in the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria.

Of course, that's a worthy photo spot already. But half way up, there's the Birg station, which combines your photo sessoin with some action. We're talking about the THRILL WALK. From the station, it leads down into the vertical walls of the impressive rock massif. There's a 200-metre-long footbridge with some fun obsticles to experience.

The Cable Car to the Schilthorn is currently only operating on weekends or good weather. Please check their current timetable on www.schilthorn.ch

9. #Royal Walk Männlichen

A view for Kings & Queens! The walk leads from the gondola station to the Männlichen summit. You can see the Kleine Scheidegg, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the Lauterbrunnen valley as well as the mountain chains of the Bernese Oberland. In less than a half hour walk, you'll be crowned with that sight.

By the way: the gondoloa from Grindelwald to Männlichen will be open from December 5th.

10. #Kleine Scheidegg

Kleine Scheidegg connects the villages of Grindelwald and Wengen. It's also where you change the train to get to the Jungfraujoch. It's the centre of a big hiking and winter sports area.

There are many spots here where you can take a nice picture. The star is always the notorious Eiger North Face. It will greet you as soon as you step out of the train. The pic of this skier dude was taken at the Rotstöcki by the way, a nice mountain restaurant above the Kleine Scheidegg train station.

11. #Terassenweg

The Terassenweg, which means terrace path, is located above the village centre of Grindelwald. You'll find many holiday apartments here as it's like a little sun terrace of the village. It's also connected to the kids ski ground we have in Grindelwald, called Bodmi. You can reach the Terrassenweg on foot while on a nice stroll or just take the local bus when you're feeling a bit lazy.

The picture of this gent was taken at the Cafe 3692. A cute little cafe with big flavor meals, located in the middle of Terrassenweg. Why 3692 though? That's the height of the Wetterhorn, one of the house mountains in Grindelwald.

12. #Jungfraujoch

We finish our list with the highest of all these Insta spots. So there's a reason why it's called Top of Europe. It's one of the most famous excursion goals in Switzerland and the highest train station in Europe as well.

Icy air sweeps over your face, snow crunches under your feet, and the panorama almost takes your breath away. That's what it feels like, standing on the Jungfraujoch, 3,454 metres above sea level. There are many attractions to explore, in- and outside the mountain.

Visiting in winter is actually not a bad idea. There are less people visiting than in during the busy summer months. However, we still recommend booking a seat in advance. And if aq can, go up via Grindelwald and go down the other way via Wengen (or vice versa). So you can see both villages during your train ride.

By the way, the new Eiger Express will run from Grindelwald Terminal starting December 5th It will take you from Grindelwald to the Eigerglacier station in only 15 minutes, which will shorten your journey significantly.
