Hiking in winter

Not in the mood for skiing or snowboarding? Not in the mood for a strenuous snowshoe tour? But you still want to enjoy the fresh mountain air and sunshine in the snow? Then we have just the thing for you. Whether along the frozen waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, with a view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate or away from the hustle and bustle in the idyllic Reichenbach Valley - you'll get your money's worth on these five winter hikes.

#1 Royal Walk Männlichen

The starting point of this short winter hike is easily accessible by cable car from Grindelwald Grund or by aerial cableway from Wengen. It takes around 25 minutes from the Männlichen mountain station to the summit of Männlichen, to the viewing platform in the shape of a crown. The breathtaking panoramic view - from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to the Breithorn, Lake Thun and the Wetterhorn - is simply... royal!

#2 Grütschalp – Winteregg –Mürren

The winter hike from Grütschalp via Winteregg to Mürren runs high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is unrivalled. You have the famous triumvirate in view along the entire route. The trail winds along the slope on sunny heights and is superbly groomed. The turning point of the tour is in the car-free mountain village of Mürren. Here, pretty wooden houses exude cosiness and rustic charm. On the way back to Grütschalp, the Männlichen and Faulhorn mountain ranges form a magnificent backdrop. Alternatively, you can cover the route by train - a journey you won't forget in a hurry. That's a promise!

#3 Gschwandtenmad Circular trail

The Reichenbach Valley boasts picturesque landscapes. Even 200 years ago, important artists and poets found inspiration here. In winter, far away from the hustle and bustle of the pistes, you can take this beautifully laid out winter hiking trail on the flat valley floor.

#4 First – Bachalpsee

From Grindelwald, you can easily reach the starting point of the hike by cable car. Once you arrive at First, you're ready to go. Right at the start, there is a short, steep ascent to the Gummihütte, followed by a gentle up and down to the frozen, snow-covered mountain lake. Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn - enjoy the impressive mountain panorama on the way. Allow around 100 minutes for the outward and return journey.

#5 Lauterbrunnen – Stechelberg

The idyllic Lauterbrunnen Valley is characterised by water, depending on the temperature of the frozen water. This hike, which can also be described as a walk, takes you past the Staubbach Falls and the Trümmelbach Falls before the trail leads past the Breithorn campsite over the Weisse Lütschine to Stechelberg, where the Mürrenbach Falls are located. You can return to Lauterbrunnen via the same route or conveniently by postbus.
