Sustainability

Tourism and sustainability are not always easy bedfellows. However, the Jungfrau Region strives to have a positive impact on nature, society and the economy.

ENERGY

Using sun, water and wood to generate electricity

Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG has 13 hydroelectric power stations and 8 reservoirs, with which it produces energy from natural resources on a massive scale. Holzwärme Grindelwald, meanwhile, produces energy from wood. Many railways, hotels and experience providers also generate energy from natural resources.

NATURE

An ecosystem worth protecting

The Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site is an honour and a great responsibility.

Furthermore, every year, the Kulturlandschaftspreis (Cultural Landscape Prize) celebrates and showcases particularly precious landscapes.

Transport

Green railways

More rail, less road. The Jungfrau Region has excellent public transport connections – even from overseas. Many railways are implementing additional sustainable measures. Two of the region’s prettiest villages – Mürren and Wengen – are even car-free.

REGIONAL PRODUCTS

Made in Jungfrau Region

Vegetables, fruit, meat, dairy products, honey, tea, beer, clothing, souvenirs and much more: producing and purchasing local products can contribute significantly to sustainability.

PEOPLE

The faces of sustainable tourism

They guide school classes through the UNESCO World Heritage Site, helping them learn about biodiversity. They explain to guests from Switzerland and abroad how hydroelectric power works. They produce their own products at Alpine cheese dairies. These are the people who drive sustainability in the Jungfrau Region.

CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY
