Tour of the Schiltalp alpine cheese dairy

Hiking - making cheese - breakfast

In summer, the mountain landscape around Mürren is not just for hiking. The main occupation of the local mountain farmers is of course not walking in the countryside but something much more exciting: cheese production.

The Schiltalp is located in the alpine heights above Gimmelen. During the guided tour, a few metres in altitude are climbed to reach the alp. Once at the top, the mountain farmers will show you their craft. The alp cheese is produced during the Summer months. Huge cauldrons, a wood fire, a large store and much more are used for this.
After an insight into the cheese dairy, all guests are treated to a tasty breakfast in the mountains.
The Schilt alpine dairy is located at 1946 metres above sea level. Guests can only reach it on foot or by bike. From Mürren, the road leads to Gimmelen, from where you turn right and follow the wide path to the alp.

The hike from Mürren takes about an hour. The way back down to Mürren takes about 45 minutes.
