The longest sledging run

Grindelwald-First

Sledge Big Pintenfritz. The route leads from the First - Faulhorn - Bussalp. And offers an impressive panoramic view of the Eiger and its mountain range.

Long, longer, Big Pintenfritz

You first have to earn your way down the 11 km long piste, one of the longest  sledging runs in Europe. First (2166 metres above sea level) can be easily reached by cable car from Grindelwald. The journey takes 25 minutes. But now you will have to pull your sledge behind you for around 2.5 hours. The marked winter hiking trail leads past the Bachalpsee lake to the Faulhorn (2681 metres above sea level). The marvellous view of the surrounding mountain landscape and the impending descent make up for the exertions of the ascent. Now it's time to put on your helmet and saddle up your sledge. Depending on your pace, you will be out and about for between 30-45 minutes. The route leads to Bussalp. If there is enough snow, you can continue to Lochsteinen - covering a total of over 1000 metres in altitude.

Did you know? Big Pintenfritz gets its name from Fritz Bohren – legendary manager of the Hotel Bellevue (known locally as the Pinte) and the Faulhorn Alpine hotel more than 100 years ago. You can find out more about this genuine Grindelwald character here.

Tip: It’s worth getting up early if you’re planning to try Big Pintenfritz. Sledging conditions are usually best in the morning, while in the afternoon the slopes can start to get slushy, depending on the temperature.
