Experience report
Mountain peaks as far as the eye can see
From Hasliberg-Reuti via Alpen tower and Horizontweg to Engstlensee - the route plan shows 1530 metres in altitude. But because it is summery warm, we decide to take the gondola cableway to Mägisalp and on to the Alpen tower to Planplatten for the first part of the stage. At the top we are thrilled by the magnificent mountain panorama. Mountain peaks as far as the eye can see. There are supposed to be 401 summits... enjoy counting them.
Along the Horizon Trail we then approach Engstlensee step by step. The mountain panorama - from the Titlis to the Trift glacier to the Grimsel world and on to the Wetterhorn - is fantastic. The well-maintained path lives up to its name. It winds more or less level along a mountain flank. Shortly before reaching the Balmeregghorn, we still have to climb a few metres in altitude. We are rewarded for the effort with the view over Lake Melchsee and Lake Tannensee. We treat ourselves to a short break. Then we descend with a slight incline to Tannensee and on to Tannalp. An inviting restaurant stands temptingly by the wayside, but we continue our hike without stopping - with Engstlenalp as our destination. The descent to Engstlenalp begins. Some passages lead along a steep cliff. But the superbly constructed hiking trail with holding ropes allows us to pass this spot without any problems. We cross a few streams, observe marmots in the lush green meadows and finally pass an idyllic collection of cheese stores. Pure Switzerland! And then the blue lake beckons. Happy after this beautiful hike, we sit down on the shore and enjoy the fantastic nature. Later, at the Engstlenalp show dairy, we treat ourselves to a delicious Hasli ice cream and buy local alpine cheese. If we had been here in the morning, we could have watched the cheese being made. But a short time later we take the Engstlenalp bus through Gental to Innertkirchen - and then the train back to Meiringen.
