Next destination: mountain lake

They are a popular destination for hikers. The mountain lakes. Here you can take a break, eat something from your rucksack, sometimes walk around them, use them for refreshment or simply "just" as a photo subject. In the Jungfrau Region you can head for any number of mountain lakes. In the Grimselwelt alone, eight reservoirs await you.

Engstlensee

One of them is the Engstlensee at 1835 metres above sea level. Many paths lead to it. And it is also easily accessible by PostBus from Meiringen. However, we recommend the 3.5-hour alpine trail from the Alpen tower – accessible by gondola cableway from Meiringen – via the Horizontweg. A little tip: rowing boats are available at the lake, which you can rent from the reception of the Hotel Engstlenalp.

Grauseeli

The Grauseeli is located at an altitude of 2515 metres above sea level. You can see it from a bird's eye view when you take the Schilthorn cable car. And of course you can also reach it on foot. The easy hike leads from the Birg station over the Seewlifuhre down to the mountain lake. Or you can take the challenging Grauseeli Loop. The picturesque lake is a popular subject for photographs – especially when the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are reflected on the water's surface.

Bachalpsee

The Bachalpsee, at 2265 metres above sea level, is the most visited mountain lake in the Jungfrau Region. It is not without reason that it is called the "Blue Jewel". The Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn, Finsteraarhorn and Grindelwald Glacier are all reflected in its waters. The mountain world around the Bachalpsee served as the basis for the planet Alderaan, the home of Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" films. It can be reached on foot in less than an hour from the mountain station of the First Railway.

Fallbodensee

The Fallbodensee is located at an altitude of around 2100 metres above sea level, on the Fallboden hill, where the ski lifts between the Kleine Scheidegg and Eigergletscher stations are located. It is also a "mirror lake". The reflection of the Eiger and Mönch in the mountain lake is simply amazing, depending on the weather. It can be reached on foot from Kleine Scheidegg in a few minutes. However, we recommend the Eiger Walk from the Eigergletscher station to Kleine Scheidegg. The centrepiece of the one-hour walk is the "Chilchli" by the Fallbodensee, which used to serve as a transformer station and looks like a chapel. Peep holes with scenes of the tragedies on the Eiger and a replica of the Eiger North Face, onto which the successful routes can be projected by laser, are just some of the things that await you here.

Sulsseeli

Or how about a hike to the Sulsseeli? It takes about an hour and a half to get from the mountain station of the Isenfluh – Sulwald cable car to the mountain lake. You must stop at the nearby Lobhornhütte – and enjoy the view. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are within reach here.

The Gadelauisee is rather unknown but no less beautiful. From the Grimsel Hospiz, you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Grimselsee. You can reach the Gelmersee with Europe's steepest open funicular railway. Yes, the list of mountain lakes in the Jungfrau Region could be extended indefinitely...
