Biking with luggage transport
One tour - all the highlights
On this stage tour, you will experience the trail highlights of the Jungfrau Region in four days. You can enjoy the unique and impressive panorama without any luggage, as this is conveniently transported from hotel to hotel.
The tour starts and ends in Grindelwald. In between, classics such as the Kleine and Grosse Scheidegg, Bachalpsee and the legendary Lauberhorn descent await you. You ride through picturesque hamlets and chalet-style villages, but above all you enjoy stunning mountain and glacier views during the four days on your bike. In addition to the world-famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate, many other 4000-metre peaks are majestically enthroned - and together with the rock, snow and eternal ice form the mighty backdrop to a unique natural spectacle.
You have to earn the impressive views and fun trails, however, as the programme includes daily stages with up to 2000 metres in altitude. So you can definitely work off your energy. Even if you are travelling with an e-MTB. Most of the time you are spoilt for choice. There are two wonderful variants available on almost every stage of the day: A direct route and a longer, slightly more technically demanding route.
For e-bikers: Battery charging stations are available at various points along the route. Depending on the battery power, we recommend carrying a spare battery in your day pack.
Variant 1: Direct tour, 29 km, 1560 vertical metres, 1650 vertical metres
Today's tour starts with a longer ascent, you can either ride the 1100 vertical metres directly up to Kleine Scheidegg (GPS track 1a_direct) or take the diversions via Männlichen (GPS track 1a_difficult). This means an additional 400 metres in altitude and 7 kilometres. The diversions is worth it because of the sensational panorama of Männlichen and the subsequent flowing romantic trail, which is great fun to ride. On Kleine Scheidegg, the hub to the Jungfraujoch, you turn away from the crowds and ride with impressive views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau towards the Lauberhorn race course, world-famous for the legendary ski race in winter. Parts of it are also accessible by bike. Ride along single trails towards Hundschopf to Wengernalp. There are two options for the onward journey to Lauterbrunnen. The technically easy option (1b_direct) leads along forest paths and meadow trails, while the difficult option (1b-difficult) leads along trails with hairpin bends, roots and steps, some of which are very technically demanding. Be careful, especially in wet conditions the wooden beams can be treacherous.
Variant 2: Longer and technically more difficult tour, 39 km, 2015 vertical metres, 2110 vertical metres.
In Lauterbrunnen, you can take the large gondola lift up the next 700 vertical metres. If you haven't had enough challenging descents for today, you can let off some steam on the demanding freeride route to Lauterbrunnen - and then take the gondola lift again. Otherwise, take a leisurely ride to Mürren (GPS 1c), with the impressive panorama of the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau triumvirate always in view.
37 km, 740 vertical metres, 1800 vertical metres
As usual, the day of touring starts with an ascent. The 700 metres in altitude to the Rotstock hut are not passable throughout. By lunch at the latest, at the stone-built hut, the exertions are forgotten and the upcoming descent with 1200 metres of descent will put a smile on your face. You will be whizzing down the official hiking trails over stones and forest floor into the valley. A varied trail with tight bends, smaller steps and flowing sections awaits you, ending at the legendary Basejump steep face in Lauterbrunnen. To round things off, the bike route leads along the Weisse Lütschine to your next stage destination in Wilderswil/Interlaken.
Variant 1: Direct tour, 32 km, 600 vertical metres, 580 vertical metres
There are basically two variants available for the first stage. The chilled and direct tour (GPS Track 3_direct) leads along the signposted mountain bike route 451 along the northern shore of Lake Brienz. However, the signposted bike route of 32 kilometres still covers 600 metres in altitude and the tour leads mainly along forest roads and paved cycle paths.
Variant 2: Longer and technically more difficult tour, 43 km, 1920 vertical metres, 1890 vertical metres.
On the more difficult tour (GPS Track 3_difficult), 42 km and almost 2000 vertical metres have to be mastered, although after the first longer descent you can also take a shortcut and roll comfortably along the Aare to Meiringen. Tough climbs are compensated for with fun on the descents, mostly on meadow trails.
Variant 1: Direct tour (technically easy, without bus), 38 km, 1900 vertical metres, 1400 vertical metres.
If you want to complete the route entirely under your own steam, it is best to take the direct route on Alpine Bike Route 1 to Grosse Scheidegg (GPS 4a_direct and 4b).
Variant 2: Direct tour (technically easy, by bus to Rosenlaui), 28 km, 1200 metres in altitude, 1500 metres in descent.
If the 1900 metres in altitude are too much for a day's stage and you would prefer to take it easier, take the post bus from Meiringen directly to Grindelwald in the morning and get off at Rosenlaui (or at an earlier or later stop). There, it's worth taking a short walk to the legendary glacier gorge before conquering the remaining 630 metres in altitude on your bike to the Grosse Scheidegg. Continue as described below on the Alpine Bike Route 1 via First and the beautiful Bachalpseetrail (GPS 4a_direct and 4b).
Variant 3: Difficult tour (more trails, partial ascent by bus), 41 km, 1900 vertical metres, 2200 vertical metres (plus 750 vertical metres and 10 km by bus).
The day with the difficult tour variant starts with a long ascent over alpine roads (GPS 4a_difficult). By the time you reach Wandelalp, you will have climbed around 1300 metres in altitude. The high moorland landscape is a real highlight for nature lovers. The descent into the Reichenbach valley is a pleasure and only a little more challenging in places. Once you reach the road to the Grosse Scheidegg, we recommend getting on the Postbus to recharge your batteries for the last metres of altitude and trails of the day on the spectacular ride up to the Grosse Scheidegg. From Grosse Scheidegg (GPS 4b), the bike trail leads via First to Bachalpsee, the most photographed mountain lake in the Alps. The GPS track runs along the hiking trail, but depending on the time of day and the weather, there may be a lot of hikers on the trail, in which case it is advisable to switch to the signposted official mountain bike route (Alpine Bike 1). After the photo stop at the lake, it's time to concentrate on the descent, on the fantastic and very varied trails to Grindelwald. The 1100 metres of descent over alpine hiking trails and root sections are the crowning glory of the day.
