The Inferno Race, which was first held in 1928 by some ‘ski-mad’ Britons, is now regarded as the biggest amateur race in the world of skiing.
The number of participants is limited to 1,850, and every year several hundred hopeful entrants have to be turned away. The varied, distinctive topography is what makes this 14.9 km course so appealing; it can also be skied outside of the race.
The all-round skier will find this course thoroughly rewarding, as the following extract from a race notice demonstrates: “In the upper section of the course, clean downhill turns and optimal line choice are required. In the middle section, an ideal downhill position will be decisive, achieved through fast gliding on the skis. From the Kanonenrohr to the Höhenlücke, the technically skilled downhill skier will have the edge. In the section from Maulerhubel to Winteregg, a good skating stride and sufficient arm strength can make the difference between victory and defeat. From Winteregg – Spriessenkehr to Lauterbrunnen, top-quality equipment, a clean downhill position and, last but not least, mental resilience will determine a good finishing time.”
Every evening, a food and drink stall and live music await you at the event site near the Alpine Sports Centre.
Good vantage points for spectators include the Mürren ski area, the finish area or the traditional Inferno parade in the village the evening before.
