Historic Gimmelwald sawmill

A piece of antique craftsmanship

Pure water power! A visit to the Sagi is particularly recommended when accompanied by Werner Feuz, the sawing expert. He shows how the water is dammed and channelled to the sawmill, how the tremel is clamped, sawn and milled. There is no electricity in the sawmill. Only natural water power is used to cut the tree trunks so that they can be used for the carpentry work.

If you visit without a guided tour, you can see the sawmill from the outside, but you will not see it in operation.

The sawmill was built in 1858. It was renovated by 2017 and is still almost as operational today as it was over 150 years ago.

The sawmill can only be reached on foot. The hike from Gimmelwald takes around 40 minutes.
