From the glaciers to Lake Brienz on a gravel bike
This circular gravel bike tour takes you from the imposing mountain and glacier landscape of the world-famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to the crystal-clear Lake Brienz and back to Grindelwald.
The tour starts and ends in Grindelwald, at the foot of the mighty Eiger and its historic north face. Over the course of three days, you’ll ride from one picture-postcard scene to the next: picturesque hamlets and chalet-style villages, stunning mountain and glacier views, spectacular waterfalls and the crystal-clear Lake Brienz. Thanks to the wide range of car-free side roads, field and forest paths, the region is simply perfect for exploring by gravel bike. The route follows official, well-signposted cycle paths throughout, so with the GPS data, navigation is a breeze.
Option 1: Direct route 30 km, 1,200 metres of ascent, 600 metres of descent
The direct route starts in Grindelwald on the Swiss Cycling Route 61, heading out of the valley along the Black Lütschine to Zweilütschinen. Here we switch to the Alpine Route 1 towards Lauterbrunnen. In Lauterbrunnen, the second ascent begins on the signposted cycle path 450 towards Mürren. From Mittelberg, we leave the signposted cycle route and ride along an asphalt path beside the railway line directly to Mürren. The car-free, unspoilt panoramic mountain village at the foot of the Schilthorn offers breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
Variant 2: Difficult tour 35 km, 2,100 metres of ascent, 1,500 metres of descent
The difficult tour option begins with a long climb of over 1,100 metres of elevation gain on a small, car-free tarmac road up to Kleine Scheidegg, the gateway to the Jungfraujoch. This is a good spot to take a break and refuel. And, of course, the impressive panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is well worth admiring. The signposted cycle route No. 1 then takes you via Wengen into the Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland’s base jumping mecca. The descent is steep; solid riding technique and good brakes are essential. A short detour to the world-famous Staubbach Falls is well worth it. In Lauterbrunnen, we join the direct route option described above.
60 km, 800 metres of ascent, 1800 metres of descent
From Mürren, you’ll head back along Bike Route 450, taking small and sometimes steep tarmac and alpine paths via Gimmelwald to Stechelberg. Now you’ll ride leisurely down the Lauterbrunnen Valley, past the Trümmelbach Falls. Once in Lauterbrunnen, you can choose to ride on the right bank of the river along forest tracks and easy trails (Alpine Cycle Route 1 – GPS track) or on the left bank along the road. Depending on the time of day, you can expect quite a lot of traffic here. From Zweilütschinen, Cycle Route 1 runs to the right of the Lütschine to Wilderswil and through Interlaken to the northern shore of Lake Brienz. From here, Cycle Route 451 leads to Brienz via a mix of tarmac and unpaved paths, constantly winding up and down, always with a beautiful view of the deep-blue Lake Brienz. In Brienz, we switch to the Aare Cycle Route No. 8. To the right of the Aare, the final kilometres of the day provide a leisurely end to a long day of cycling.
30 km, 1,500 metres of ascent, 1,050 metres of descent
The final day of the circular tour also follows Alpine Bike Route No. 1. Just after the first few metres of ascent, you’ll reach the day’s first attraction: the legendary Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes defeated his arch-enemy Professor Moriarty. After a further 400 metres of ascent, you’ll reach Rosenlaui. The spectacular glacial gorge can be explored on foot; the walk takes around 45 minutes. After a further 100 metres of ascent, the beautiful Chalet Schwarzwaldalp beckons with culinary delights. The tour now continues to the highest point of the day, the Grosse Scheidegg. From here, with the imposing Wetterhorn behind you, the rapid descent to Grindelwald begins.
