Hasliberg - Engstlenalp

Following the Horizontweg, we then approach Lake Engstlen step by step. The mountain panorama – from the Titlis to the Trift Glacier, on to the Grimsel region and further to the Wetterhorn – is fantastic. The well-maintained path certainly lives up to its name. It winds its way more or less level along a mountainside. Just before the Balmeregghorn, we do have a few metres of elevation to climb after all. We’re rewarded for the effort with the view over Lake Melch and Lake Tannensee. We treat ourselves to a short break. Afterwards, the path descends gently towards Lake Tannensee and on to Tannalp. An inviting restaurant stands temptingly by the side of the path, but – with Engstlenalp as our destination in mind – we continue our walk without stopping. The descent to Engstlenalp begins. Some sections run alongside a steep cliff face. But the superbly maintained footpath, complete with handrails, allows us to pass this section without any trouble. We cross a few little streams, spot marmots in the lush green meadows and finally pass an idyllic cluster of cheese storehouses. Switzerland at its best! And then the blue lake beckons. Happy after this lovely walk, we sit down on the shore and enjoy the fantastic natural surroundings. Later, at the Engstlenalp demonstration cheese dairy, we treat ourselves to a delicious Hasli ice cream and buy some local alpine cheese. Had we been here in the morning, we could even have watched the cheese being made. As it is, a short while later we take the Engstlenalp bus through the Gental valley to Innertkirchen – and then catch the train back to Meiringen.
