Moo!

What would Switzerland, and the Jungfrau Region in particular, be without cows? Of course, it's still a beautiful mountain region, but something would be missing. That's why we've put together some cow facts in this blogbuster.

#1 How to become a cow sponsor

As the sponsor of a cow, you can become part of sustainable cheese production. Your cow spends the summer on the alp and feeds on healthy grass and herbs. The dairyman or dairywoman milks the animal and processes the milk into delicious cheese directly on the alp. This cheese belongs to you and you can pick it up at the Chästeilet in autumn.

#2 A gondola for eight people - or one cow

The small, almost nostalgic little train has been in operation since 1975 and offers space for eight people or one cow - according to the Isenfluh - Sulwald cable car website. But don't worry, the cows won't really compete with you for space.

#3 When cows are welcomed like stars

Swiss cows spend the hot summer on the alpine pastures, where they can eat whatever they want. But as soon as the days get shorter, it gets uncomfortably cold on the alp and our four-legged friends have to go back down into the valley. In mid-September, the whole village comes together to celebrate the return of the animals, which are decorated with flowers, ribbons and bells - at the so-called "Alpabzug".

#4 More cows than people

There are over 700,000 cows in Switzerland. With a population of 8.7 million inhabitants, this means that every twelfth inhabitant "owns" a cow. Of course, cows usually live in herds on farms - and so rumour has it that some villages in Switzerland have more cows than people.
